Narrative Curriculum Vitae (CVs)
QMU supports the narrative approach to evidencing researchers’ contributions to their disciplines and to broader research and KE culture.
This support is consistent with our commitment to the principles of the Leiden Manifesto, specifically to substantiating the assessment of individual researchers with a qualitative judgement of their portfolio and, more broadly, responsible approach to use of metrics in research assessment. This is a change from metrics-based CVs that are primarily publication lists with employment and education history with little context.
What is a narrative CV?
A narrative CV is a CV format that provides a structured written description of a person’s contributions and achievements that reflects a broad range of relevant skills and experiences, more than can often be seen in a traditional academic CV. They are highly flexible and can be used by a range of people and organisations in a range of contexts within research and innovation (R&I), from applying for funding, to recruitment practices (DORA).
UK Research and Innovation R4RI Model
The UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has defined four core modules of their narrative CV model and are piloting it across the Research Councils.
They use the Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI) model, which is a flexible narrative CV template designed to help researchers demonstrate evidence of a wider range of skills and experience than a traditional academic CV when applying for UKRI funding opportunities.
Researchers, research managers and colleagues involved in research in other roles may find this model helpful when drafting your own narrative CV.
