Culture, Employment and Development in Academic Research (CEDARS)

QMU is committed to the national survey seeking views about the experiences of being a researcher in UK Higher Education.

The biennial Culture, Employment and Development in Academic Research Survey – (CEDARS) gathers anonymous data about working conditions, research culture, career aspirations and career development opportunities for research staff and research leaders in higher education institutions across the UK.

CEDARS replaced the Careers in Research Online Survey (CROS) and the Principal Investigators and Research Leaders Survey (PIRLS). The new questions provide opportunities for researchers to share their experiences of research culture and the associated responsibilities of those who manage researchers. CEDARS aligns to the principles of the Researcher Development Concordat and provides institutions with critical information on their progress in implementing these principles.

In 2020, QMU was 1 of only 22 UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to participate in first iteration of CEDARS. Our ongoing participation (2021, 2023 & 2024 CEDARS Research Culture Landscape pilot) provide us with strong, nationally benchmarked data, to monitor our performance against the Researcher Development Concordat Principles and inform efforts to develop positive, healthy research culture.

The Research Culture Landscape Survey (RCLS) pilot 2024

The RCLS pilot 2024 was designed to align with the Research Culture Framework to capture a snapshot of how research culture is experienced in HEIs.

To achieve this, the RCLS sought the views of respondents on local working environment, recognition, career development and progression as well as views on local research culture.

Both those who conduct and those who enable research were encouraged to participate, which included people working in personnel services, technical staff, and academics in diverse roles such as in innovation, knowledge exchange and enterprise, learning and scholarship, research and teaching, and research only, as well as doctoral students.
