What to expect from your Induction

Welcome Hub Event for New Students & Free Food!

This is a brand new event that we are very excited to be running during induction week this year. Staff from Registry, Student Services, Effective Learning Service, Academic Administration, Canvas and our Student Champions will be coming together to meet with students and have a chat about life at QMU. Come along and find out about:

  • Accessing Canvas - QMU's online learning environment
  • Student Funding
  • Council Tax discounts
  • Registering with a GP
  • Top Tips from Current Students
  • Paying fees
  • Support with Study
  • Returning to Study
  • Disability Services
  • Finding your way around...and much more

So if you have any questions about any aspect of your studies or anything else, come and see us at the Welcome Hub in the Atrium (located next to Starbucks) on the 7th September 2023 (1pm - 5pm).

We are also giving away free lunch vouchers that can be used in 1875 (the Canteen) until the 29th September.

University Welcome Talk

This session takes around 45 minutes to an hour and will be run by staff from Student Services, the Students' Union and the Senior Management team. It is an opportunity to hear about all of the ways in which we can support you through your journey at QMU. There will also be time to ask questions. 

IT Assistance

This is an online induction which you can access via the following link. We will also schedule this as part of your induction session as a reminder that you complete it.

There will also be two IT Drop-In sessions during induction week on Tuesday 5th September (3pm - 4pm) and Wednesday 6th September (10am - 11am) in Room 1126 which is located in the Library (when you enter turn left. The room is located at the very end of the coridoor)

LRC (Library) Induction

This is an optional induction session which you can either attend in person or watch online via the following link. We will schedule an in-person session as part of your induction schedule you do not have to attend if you would prefer to watch it online.

Programme Talk

This session will be an opportunity to meet your Course Leader and fellow students on your course as well as find out about the course content. It is vital that you attend this session which will take around 1 to 2 hours. For some courses the session may be longer.

Pre-Placement Talk

All Health Sciences & Education Studies (Primary) students who will be heading out on placement as part of your course, will also need to attend a Pre-Placement Talk as part of their induction. More information can be found here 

Students' Union

As a student at Queen Margaret University you are automatically a member of the Students’ Union whether you are part-time, full-time, distance learning, undergraduate or postgraduate. 

The Students’ Union is a student led organisation, rated best in Edinburgh, specialising in enhancing the student experience. We offer advice and support services, representation, extra-curricular activities through sports and societies, volunteering opportunities, events and a student focused café and bar.
