Interview with IGHD doctoral intern, Lucia Blažinská
Lucia is from Trenčín in Slovakia. She took part in a doctoral internship at the Institute for Global Health & Development (IGHD) at QMU in 2016.
The internship focussed on getting experience in research and study design over two months.
In 2014, Lucia completed a Masters in public health at Trnava University in Slovakia. Her diploma thesis was on sickness absence from work, at both national and international levels.
Lucia is now an internal PhD student in the Department of Public Health at Trnava University.
In addition to public health related skills, Lucia has experience in occupational health services work, and measurement practice (BMI index, glycaemia, cholesterol, spirometry) to identify prevalence of risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.
Why did you choose to study in the Institute for Global Health & Development (IGHD) at QMU?
“I was interested in studying public health in the UK and knew that the Institute for Global Health and Development at QMU specialises in this area.
“The course helped me get a better understanding of methodology in teaching approach, possibilities in practice for students and forms motivation and assessment in the UK.
“Studying in Scotland was a challenge for me, but it definitely helped me to broaden my horizons in public health in a western developed country and to improve my English language skills.”
What did you like most about studying in the Institute for Global Health & Development (IGHD) at QMU?
“I think that the teaching programme at QMU is well organised and I benefitted from lot of professional people and creative lecturers is advantage for your university.
“I enjoyed integrating with other students from different countries and backgrounds through class workshops or team projects. I think it’s important to learn how to cooperate and work with other people effectively.
“I’m now more confident in my use of the English language and I’m using the knowledge and skills acquired at QMU to help me with PhD teaching and research back in Slovakia, where I’m focusing on measles outbreak prediction in Slovakia and other communicable disease issues.”
