Coming from College Induction Programme
Your Coming from College Induction Programme finishes at the end of this week! We hope you have enjoyed it and learnt a lot about QMU and what to expect, and we wish you every success as you embark on your student journey with us.

**Please see NEWSLETTER #4 (23rd August) for the links to join this week's final sessions**

Study Skills Advice
If you have been attending the online Induction sessions you will already have met Eloise and Rosa from the Effective Learning Service, based in the LRC.

You can also watch a short film about the ELS, the services the offer and where to find them on the Coming from College webpage.

The Effective Learning Service (ELS) offers guidance and support to all students who wish to develop their academic writing and study skills. The ELS will help you become as self-reliant as possible as you progress through your degree programme at QMU.

Regular study skills workshops on a wide range of topics such as: Reflective Practice, Effective Presentations, Understanding Feedback and much more run throughout the academic year. The workshops are small and informal, and will be held either on campus or online. You can book to attend a workshop or make an individual appointment on the main booking system for Student Services: https://studentcentral.qmu.ac.uk/s/els.

The ELS have a number of useful leaflets (see the ELS webpages) and Quick Guides. Links are provided below so you can browse the Quick Guides at your leisure:
The Liaison Librarians also offer a wide variety of workshops throughout the year, with a focus on using LRC Resources and Referencing. We are planning for sessions to be online and in-person in the coming year. Whichever option you prefer, you must book onto these sessions using the LRC Booking System: https://qmu.libcal.com/calendar/workshops.
Hello from the Students' Union
Don't forget, your Student President, Aasiyah, and Vice-President, Sophie are available for a final chat in the online Student Drop-in on Thursday at 10am. Check out what they have planned for this year's Freshers below - it might be a bit different to a normal year, but it will still be fun and a great way to meet other students and get involved in Student Life at QMU.

The Students' Union (SU) welcomes you to Queen Margaret University. If at any time you have any questions, you can find your student representatives upstairs from Maggie's in the SU office.
This year Freshers includes many adapted events ensuring that you will meet new peers and make lasting memories. As a QMU student you are automatically a member of the SU, and we want you to make the most of this. You may think the SU is just a bar, but it's much more than just a pretty place. While we do have a great bar (with great prices... and pitchers), the SU is a student-led and student-centred registered charity. We work hard to ensure that students have the best university experience while studying at QMU. Starting uni can be overwhelming, especially in recent times, but we are here to help you and show you that you made the right choice by coming to QMU! We offer advice and support, have a wide range of extracurricular activities and represent the views of students to the University & beyond.

There are many ways to get involved with the Union. We have some 43 Sports & Societies you can become a member of. You can even start your own sport club or society! You can also become a class rep or be a part of forums & committees, which we run to collect feedback & data so that your student experience is continuously developed to meet everyone's needs. QMU will always have a place for you!
This year, Freshers will be delivered as a two-week-long programme in collaboration with the ResLife team that will give you the chance to get to know other students through various events, both on campus and online. This will be followed by our great Give It a Go Week, where you can try out any sport or society, which will begin with a kick-off event. At this, you will be able to meet our amazing committees face-to-face.

For more information, check out our 2021 Freshers Welcome Guide, join our Freshers Facebook Group, and follow our QMUSU Facebook page where we'll keep you posted with updates and opportunities. Visit the website for info on the team that leads the SU and a full list of Sports & Societies.

We look forward to seeing you at QMU!

IT Systems, Apps and Guides
  • The Student Portal
The Student Portal provides a great way to access live and personalised timetable information. It's accessible via any device with an internet connection by simply going to the QMU website and clicking on 'QMU Portal' in the top right and then logging in.

In order to access your timetable, you must matriculate first.

Timetable information for the current day can be viewed as well as a breakdown of any week of the year. This information will update automatically when any changes are made to your timetable.

Information on the QMU Student Portal, including a guide on using it in general, can be found here.

The Student Portal allows you to do everything you can do on the App, and more! You can complete online matriculation in later years, view your attendance, download and submit forms such as Absence Forms, and select modules for the year ahead.
  • MyQMU App
Don't forget that you can download the MyQMU App to your smartphone, so you are always up to date with all the important things:
  • Your timetable
  • Assessment information and feedback dates
  • Live Bus & Train times
  • Your smartcard account balances
  • Daily menu in the canteen, 1875
Watch the short guide to the MyQMU App and get links to the Google Play and App Store here.
  • The HUB
Once you have matriculated you can also log into the HUB site, QMU's virtual learning environment.

There's an online induction to the HUB which you can complete at your own leisure. At the top of the QMU website, click the HUB link. Once you are logged in, click on the "How to use the HUB" link in the black box on the homepage.

Within the Help & Support link at the top of the homepage, you will also find Guides and troubleshooting for Collaborate, Turnitin and PebblePad - of course, if you have been attending our online induction sessions you will already be well experienced with using Collaborate and will have received some advice and guidance regarding HUB and Turnitin!
  • Online IT Induction
The IT Team are running a "Digital Experience Festival" from 13th-24th September and you can start now with the Digital Experience Tour for a general overview of all IT systems at QMU.

Once you have completed the online inductions and consulted the videos and guides mentioned above, if you are still having issues with your IT then you can book a 10-minute online appointment with The Geek Station during Induction Week. Here, the IT Team will be available to offer help and advice about your particular problem or question. Please see the Digital Experience Festival webpage for the link to The Geek Station booking system.

Car Parking Update
The car park will be open and no permit restrictions will be in force for Induction Week.

After the first couple of weeks of semester, you will require a permit to park on campus. You can buy these on a daily basis from the Security Team at Reception, or you can apply for a single semester/academic year permit. Check for the latest updates on the Parking on Campus webpage.
