Renata Chudzik worked as a chef for three years, but the impact of constant 12 hours shifts meant precious time with family was drastically curtailed. Despite her love for cooking, she decided to make a change to secure a more sustainable work-life balance. So, in order to progress her studies in Scotland, she enlisted in a SWAP course at Newbattle Abbey College in Dalkeith, which supported adult returners to education. Her success on the course allowed her to gain direct entry to the BA (Hons) Education Studies at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. Having graduated from QMU in July 2024, she went on to secure her dream job as a Student Wellbeing and Support Assistant in the Student Support and Wellbeing Service back at Newbattle Abbey College. She is now loving her role supporting students and helping them achieve their potential as they progress their education journeys.
Renata tells us more about struggles with dyslexia, her student journey and her experience of studying the BA (Hons) Education Studies at QMU.
What attracted you to the BA (Hons) Education Studies?
From a young age, I've always been intrigued by the intricacies of education - how schools operate, the impact they have on children's development, and the processes behind the formulation of educational policy. My personal experience with dyslexia highlighted the gaps in support systems within the education sector. During my own schooling, I struggled without the necessary resources to help me navigate my learning challenges. This experience ignited my passion for making a difference and ensuring that young people receive the support they need to thrive in their educational journeys. I was eager to delve deeper into the field through the BA (Hons) Education Studies programme, so I can contribute to create a more equitable educational environment for all students.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
What I enjoyed most about the course was the well-rounded experience it offered. The lectures and seminars were not only informative, but also engaging - fostering an environment of active learning. I truly relished my time at the University - the atmosphere is amazing. I loved spending hours in the library's study rooms, which provided a perfect space for focused individual work.
Moreover, the course significantly enhanced my understanding of the role of education in addressing broader societal issues. The development of essential research skills helped me to effectively select and apply suitable methods for academic and professional inquiry, enabling me to analyse information critically and with confidence. Exploring the intersection of global health and education opened my eyes to how vital education is in promoting sustainable practices worldwide. This understanding was further enriched by discussions on societal challenges like poverty and social exclusion, which highlighted how education can be a powerful tool for promoting social justice. Overall, this experience not only deepened my appreciation for educational frameworks, it strengthened my conviction about the transformative power of education in creating a more equitable society.
What were the challenges?
The biggest challenge was juggling the demands of caring for two young children while pursuing full-time studies and working part-time in my fourth year. Balancing these responsibilities often felt like a high-wire act, requiring careful planning and a lot of flexibility.
There were moments when it felt overwhelming, especially during exam periods or project deadlines. I became quite adept at managing my time - scheduling study sessions during nap times, turning family activities into learning moments, and utilising late nights for assignments.
Despite the challenges, I found a unique joy in this whirlwind of responsibility. Each late-night study session was an investment in our future, not just my own. The experience taught me resilience and the importance of prioritising my time. My children became my biggest cheerleaders, often surprising me with their support and understanding.
In the end, these challenges only enriched my experience, providing a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of education and the role it plays in shaping our lives and futures.
Did you undertake placements?
Yes, my placement was a great experience! The flexible nature of the placement allowed me to easily fit it into my busy schedule, which was a huge plus.
During my time there, I found it fascinating to see how the theories I learned at University could be applied in real-life situations within the community. Sometimes, the connections between theory and practice are not immediately obvious, but working directly in the field opened my eyes to the impact of what I had studied. It was incredibly rewarding to witness these concepts in action and to contribute to something meaningful. Overall, it was an enjoyable and enriching experience that deepened my understanding of the subject matter!
What was the most valuable lesson you learned on your placement?
I learned just how crucial a diverse learning environment is for individuals. I had the opportunity to observe young people with learning differences and anxiety, and it became clear how significantly these factors can impact their educational experiences.
I saw firsthand how important it is for them to feel settled and safe, allowing them the chance to thrive. Everyone learns differently, and providing a variety of approaches can really make a difference. Watching them engage with their education in ways that suited their individual needs was inspiring and rewarding. It reinforced the idea that fostering an inclusive atmosphere not only benefits those with challenges, but enriches the learning experience for everyone involved. This insight was truly an eye-opener and a reminder of the powerful impact we can have by embracing different learning styles!
What were your most memorable moments at QMU?
These revolved around the diverse experiences and learning opportunities that shaped both my personal and professional growth. One standout moment was participating in a group work where we collaborated with students from various disciplines. This experience not only enriched my understanding of different perspectives, but also highlighted the importance of teamwork and communication.
Additionally, the friendships I developed during my time at QMU, whether through late-night study sessions or social events, were incredibly meaningful. These connections created a sense of community and support that made my journey even more enjoyable.
Overall, the combination of academic challenges and lasting friendships truly defined my time at QMU, and left a lasting impression on me.
How did your lecturers support your learning?
The support I received from my lecturers at QMU was nothing short of extraordinary. I still recall how their encouragement and dedication transformed my learning experience into something truly impactful.
In one particularly challenging course, I found myself grappling with complex concepts that seemed overwhelming at first. On the first day of class, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. The lecturer’s warm demeanor quickly eased my nerves, as they engaged us with fascinating real-world examples that made the material come alive.
What truly set this experience apart was the lecturer’s commitment to ensuring that every student felt seen and supported. They were openly inviting us to bring questions or to discuss our thoughts about the course.
The lecturer also went above and beyond by providing us with additional resources. From inviting guest speakers to offering access to research materials and webinars, they enriched our understanding and appreciation of the subject matter. Their holistic approach to education made the learning experience feel vibrant and multifaceted.
As the semester drew to a close, we were assigned a group project that challenged us to apply everything we had learned. My team felt the pressure, but the lecturer was there to guide us through the process. Providing constructive feedback and reassurance, they helped us refine our ideas and presentations, ensuring we were confident in our abilities.
Looking back, I am immensely grateful for the incredible support I received from my lecturers. Their dedication not only enhanced my academic journey, but also instilled in me a love for learning that continues to influence me today. The lessons I learned from them - perseverance, curiosity, and collaboration - are values I carry with me into every challenge I face.
Did you use other support services when you were studying at QMU?
I took advantage of several QMU support services that truly enhanced my experience and academic journey. One of the standout resources was the Effective Learning Service (ELS). I found their assistance invaluable in building my confidence in writing skills, which ultimately improved my academic performance. This experience has also equipped me with the tools to support my own students at Newbattle Abbey College, which is incredibly rewarding. It’s vital to book these sessions well in advance, especially if you’re preparing for assessments. Last-minute bookings can be quite challenging!
I also relied on the support of the Student Funding Service every year, as it provided crucial childcare funding when I was studying with a four-month-old baby and a seven-year-old son. Thanks to this funding, I was able to focus on my studies and successfully complete my degree.
Additionally, the Disability Service was instrumental in helping me with my Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) application due to my dyslexia. The team’s guidance made the process much smoother and ensured I received the accommodations I needed.
Lastly, the Careers and Employability Service played a role before I entered my third year. I was feeling lost regarding my career path after graduation, and their advice helped clarify my options and set me on a more focused trajectory.
Overall, these services enriched my time at QMU, and I am grateful for the support I received that allowed me to navigate both my studies and personal life effectively.
What was your experience of outdoor learning on the degree course?
My experience of outdoor learning was incredibly enriching and memorable. It provided a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, which deepened my understanding of the subject matter.
Being in nature allowed for a hands-on approach to learning, fostering teamwork and collaboration among peers as we tackled various challenges together. The fresh air and natural surroundings not only enhanced our engagement but also made the learning process more enjoyable and stimulating.
Additionally, outdoor learning encouraged us to think creatively and adapt to different situations, which ultimately helped to develop problem-solving skills. Overall, it was a valuable component of my education that I believe will stay with me long after my studies.
What job did you go on to following graduation?
I tried to find a summer job before my fourth year. I came across an advert at Newbattle Abbey College for a temporary, part-time position as a Support for Learning Assistant. I decided to apply as it was a huge opportunity to gain valuable experience. I had previously completed my SWAP course there, so I was familiar with the beautiful environment, and I hoped to stay longer if things worked out. After graduation, I received an offer from the College for a permanent, full-time position as a Support for Learning Assistant. I was excited to continue in this role at the end of my fourth year, just before graduating, as it aligned well with my interests and skills.
Tell us about your current role at Newbattle Abbey College?
I'm proud to serve as a full-time Student Wellbeing and Support Assistant at the College, and I genuinely love what I do! The unique atmosphere of this small institution allows me to build meaningful connections with the students, making each day an adventure.
My role is multifaceted, and I'm constantly engaged in a variety of activities. I don't just support my students academically; I help them organise their studies, ensuring they don't feel overloaded. It's a joy to witness them develop strategies that lead to academic success, but my support extends beyond that. I'm also there for their mental wellbeing, connecting them with professionals when needed, and providing a safe space for them to express their concerns.
I also guide students through their funding applications (eg SAAS and UCAS), and sometimes lend a hand in the classroom. No two days are the same here - some involve one-on-one coaching sessions, facilitating group discussions or attending to students' varied needs.
What I find truly rewarding is watching my students graduate at the end of the year. That moment of pride and accomplishment shared with them is the best feeling in the world. It's this satisfaction and the vibrant daily challenges that keep my passion for this role alive and thriving. Every day at Newbattle Abbey College is a new chapter, and I'm excited to be a part of my students' journeys!
