For Luis, studying Acting and Performance at Queen Margaret University gave him the opportunity to build his confidence and develop his skills as a performer. Drawn to the QMU's notable list of acting alumni, he found a supportive environment where tutors challenged and encouraged him to reach his potential. Since graduating, Luis has continued to work as a professional actor, performing in productions across the UK, with his latest production, Carnegie, taking to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer.
Why did you choose to study at QMU and what attracted you to the course?
I chose to study at Queen Margaret based on the notable alumni I had heard of and word of mouth from some of my lecturers at college. The course seemed to be what I was looking for in my training, and this was solidified once I attended the recall audition and met the staff who would become my future tutors.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
How friendly, helpful, and respectful all the faculty were. They were firm, but kind, and always tried their best to push you forward to better things.
Were there any particular course activities you found especially interesting?
I think the graduate showcase at the end of the year is something pretty amazing. A chance to invite and impress a whole audience of agents and possibly sign yourself on with one of them.
How did your lecturers support your learning?
1-to-1 sessions at the end of term were the main way we caught up and discussed what needed improvement and what was going right, but regular, smaller check-ins were also available throughout the year.
What challenges did you face with the course and/or university life? How did you overcome them?
I commuted from home to university every day, so time management and having energy to give 100% was a challenge, but with time, it became easier to overcome. Another challenge was writing, I am not the most confident academic writer, but QMU always had resources to help.
Do you have any advice for students who might be interested in this course?
Give it a shot! I can confidently say the training, plus the resources you have available to you at QMU are phenomenal and have built my confidence tenfold.
What’s your ‘top tip’ for making the most of being a student?
Make friends attend clubs and make the most of everything you can as its over very quickly and you'll look back and regret not facing the fear.
What was the most valuable lesson that you learned at university?
The world isn't simple, so if you want something, you need to work for it, but most importantly, never give up on what you love most.
Can you tell us about your life post-graduation?
I have fortunately kept working as a professional actor after leaving QMU. I work closely with one of my former lecturers at a touring kids show company. I have also been around the UK with other shows such as “The Polar Express - Train Ride”, and I am currently working on a show called “Carnegie”, which I am taking to the Fringe this year.
