After commuting from Dalgety Bay in Fife throughout his studies, 21-year-old Andrew Preston graduated from QMU in 2026 with a BA (Hons) Business Management with Finance. Drawn to QMU by its unique combination of business and finance, Andrew made the most of every opportunity on offer, including a life-changing study exchange in the United States. Now preparing to begin a Master's in Banking and Finance at the University of St Andrews, he reflects on the experiences, friendships and opportunities that helped shape his journey.
Why did you choose to study at QMU?
After leaving high school, I completed a HND in Business Management at Fife College. At the end of the course, we had the option of continuing our studies either at Fife College or transferring to university. We were given a range of degree options that aligned with our previous studies, however, the majority were marketing focused and I had developed a real interest in finance.
QMU was one of few universities offering a course that combined both business management and finance. I think it is so important for students to develop an understanding of finance as it underpins every business decision. Whether it's working in marketing, management, human resources, operations or entrepreneurship, people are expected to understand budgets, profitability, investment decisions and financial performance, and that goes for every type of business, even charity work.
After attending several open days, QMU stood out as the clear choice as the lecturers and students were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and I loved the campus environment, with its small, more quiet setting and surrounding greenery.
What did you enjoy the most about your course?
One of the highlights of my course was the financial mathematics modules. I found them incredibly rewarding because they challenged me to fully understand every detail of an equation. I think it was the satisfaction of putting in so much hard work into something I was not good at in school…then realising I am good at this and I love it.
Overall, I think the finance specialised route is one of the Queen Margaret Business School’s best options, as I think the additional skillset provides students with a real edge. Not to be biased or anything, I just think it's extremely important to understand! Generally, I also enjoyed understanding the HOW behind businesses. I find it interesting how even the smallest decisions can have a significant impact on the way an organisation operates and succeeds.
Tell us about your exchange experience.
I had the opportunity to study abroad at Eastern Connecticut State University from January to May 2025, and it was genuinely the experience of a lifetime. Every day I wish I could relive it.
The American campus life is fantastic for meeting people and building lifelong friendships because students live on campus throughout their entire university experience in shared apartments. During my time there, I travelled to several different states, met incredible people who I still visit regularly, and achieved a GPA of 3.825 (which is the equivalent of a strong First-Class Honours in the UK. I chose modules that linked to my course the best, so Financial Management, Banking, Research Methods in Management, and Strategic Management. I would recommend studying abroad to anyone who has the opportunity! It exceeded every expectation I had.
What are your hopes for the future?
Since graduating from QMU, I have been preparing for the next chapter by searching for accommodation in St Andrews. I will be studying a Master's in Banking and Finance at the University of St Andrews and have recently signed the lease for a shared house with other postgraduate students, who I am looking forward to meeting.
Looking ahead, I hope to complete my master's degree, work abroad, continue travelling, and build an exciting and successful career.
What advice do you have for any potential students looking to study at QMU?
For anyone considering studying at QMU, my advice is simple - DO IT! You will be taught by outstanding lecturers, meet amazing people, and have opportunities that can genuinely shape your future.
Additionally, if you get the chance to study abroad… DO IT! It will exceed every expectation you have. Just don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone as that's where you'll make your best memories, create incredible opportunities, and learn the most! And that goes for every aspect in life! You can be and do anything you want!
