Corticosteroid Injection Therapy
This Corticosteroid Injection Therapy module is for HCPC registered podiatrists looking to enhance their knowledge on the theory and practical elements of steroid injections for the foot and ankle.
The module will enable you to develop your knowledge on the theory of corticosteroid injection, and will also allow you to gain experience in practical elements of steroid injection via simulated learning.
The module can be used to enhance knowledge generally on steroid injection therapy, as a refresher for those already competent in steroid injection therapy, or for those looking to develop their skills in steroid injection therapy within the workplace (for the first time). Those wishing to utilise steroid injection therapy in the workplace can undertake a portfolio of learning following the module.
This module covers the theory of steroid injection for foot and ankle problems (as well as simulated practical training). As per the accepted standard in practice for Podiatrists, a work place portfolio must be done post completion of this module, evidencing supported mentoring in the practical application of steroid injections. Only after this portfolio has been completed, should clinicians practice steroid injections in the clinical setting as part of their practice.
Why QMU?
- The steroid module is being taught by experts in the field, with expertise across MSK, Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Rheumatology.
- The course offers simulated practical teaching.
- The course will enhance clinical knowledge and skill, and possibly expand future employability opportunities.
- Small course/cohort, enhanced support options and learning facilitated in a safe space with peer and tutor support
This course is for HCPC registered podiatrists looking to improve their knowledge and practical skills in relation to steroid injection therapy.
What will I learn on the course?
You will learn about the physiology, and pathophysiology of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. You will learn about synthetic preparations of corticosteroids which are used in practice, and we will explore clinical cases when steroid injections should (and should not) be used. We will explore critical/clinical decision making with respect to steroid injection therapy in a multitude of different clinical scenarios, as well as exploring the different routes of delivery for steroid medications. There will be opportunities for simulated practical training on steroid injection therapy techniques of the foot and ankle.
By the end of the course, what will I be able to do?
On completion of the course, you will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding in relation to the theory of steroid injection therapy;
- apply this knowledge to practice critically, showing an understanding when steroid injection would be appropriate; and when it would/may not be appropriate;
- have an understanding of the practical approach to many common steroid injection techniques in the foot and ankle; and
- appreciate the role steroid injection therapy has with respect to (and when compared to) other treatment modalities.
How is the course delivered?
A mixture of online asynchronous lectures, plus two days of contact with seminars, practical work, group work, and simulated injection training.
How long does the course last for and how much time will I need to spend on it each week?
The course will start on 23 March 2026 where you will have access to course material and should commence pre-reading across the following 6 weeks. At the end of the 6-week asynchronous learning period, you will attend QMU for two days (in May) for the taught theory and practical components of the course. those opting to study for the credited version of the course will complete an exam at the end of the second day on campus.
Does the course have an assessment and if so, what sort of assessment will it be?
You can opt to do a credited OR non-credited version of this module.
If opting you complete the credited version, you would complete an exam at the end of day two of the on campus contact days. Those who pass (at 50%) would gain 10 credits at level 11 for this module. You may then go on in the workplace to complete 10 supervised injections via an injection portfolio – this must be completed within two years of completing this module. For those wishing to practice steroid injections as part of their clinical role, this portfolio must be completed prior to practising autonomously.
The non-credit version of the module will not include an exam or offer any credits, but you would receive a certificate of engagement/attendance. Normally, those who opt for this route would not be eligible to then undertake the supervised injections/steroid injection portfolio, as they have not undertaken an examination prior to this. The exception would be those who have undertaken a RCOP approved steroid injection course and exam within the last four years, they may attend this module as an update, acquire the certificate for engagement, and then complete their supervised injection/injection portfolio in the time period outlined above.
Who will be teaching me?
You will be taught by Joseph McIntyre and Neil Pomfret, podiatry staff at QMU
What equipment will I need for this course?
You will require access to a computer or laptop, internet connectivity and a webcam.
Student support/access to facilities
For the duration of your course you will be able to make use of our on-campus learning resource centre as well as access to our full range of online resources, including e-books and academic journals.
You will also have limited, mainly online access to Student Services support. Students with particular support requirements can contact the Disability Service.
As you will be studying with us for less than a full academic year you will not be provided with a personal academic tutor (PAT). However, any queries regarding your studies should be directed to the staff member leading the delivery of your course.
