Alitzel Hoyo Martinez – Events & Festival Management – Level 3
“One must travel to learn” – Mark Twain

Pre-Departure:
Never did I imagine that I would have the opportunity to participate in a study abroad program in the United States. When I discovered it was possible with my Events and Management degree from Queen Margaret University, I’ve done as much research to find the perfect location. Austin, Texas, the music capital of the world, seemed like the ultimate fit for me given my passion for live music and aspirations to work in the industry. It was also a great option as the classes provided by St. Edwards University in Austin, aligned with the classes required for my course.
The application process through QMU was relatively straightforward; I applied in January 2023 and it got approved by April/May. Sorting out my U.S visa was mostly an online procedure, although due to my dual nationality, I was required to make a visit to the immigration office in London. It is important to know that applying for the visa early is advisable to avoid any delays and ensure all paperwork is up to date. Additionally, I needed to gather proof of finances, purchase health insurance through the partnered university and select my classes, all before starting the semester in January 2024.
Once my paperwork was sorted and classes selected, I was eagerly waiting to move to Austin. The idea of being able to immerse myself in the vibrant music scene and explore the cultural landscape of the city was something I had long dreamed of. All I can say is that the wait was worth it.
Finances:
To be honest, I initially doubted whether I could afford the program, despite always having a part-time job during university and working full-time over the summer. However, I was encouraged to apply for funding and was fortunate to receive the Lisa Persdotter Simonyi grant, for which I am immensely grateful. Without this grant, my dream of studying abroad would never have been possible.
The grant covered the cost of accommodation for the term, enabled me to purchase necessary books for the semester, and contributed towards the meal plan offered by the exchange university. Because of it, I was able to use my savings to save up for food, flights, transportation, and experiences in Austin. The financial support provided by the grant alleviated my concerns and made my study abroad experience a reality.
I would have liked to work whilst doing my semester abroad, so I could further support myself, and even though it is an option through the university, it is necessary to apply for a social security number prior moving to the U.S. Since I was not aware, I was unable to do so.
Accommodation:
St. Edwards University encourages exchange students to stay in dorms or accommodation on campus to ensure a smooth transition and to facilitate university life. The campus is so lovely and the accommodation is right in the middle which makes it really easy to move around. The flat is equipped with furniture and a kitchen so you have your own space. I was in a flat with three other girls who became really good friends and have made this experience even more amazing.
University Life:
St. Edward’s University is a great option as the campus has really pretty walks and spots to study, especially when it’s sunny. Faculty and students are really friendly and welcoming. The education system is different to QMU. However, I have really enjoyed having a variety of classes and being able to choose topics I am interested in. Lecturers are also super helpful and interactive in classes.
There are a lot of events going on, and I can say for sure that the university spirit is strong. You can immerse yourself in the arts, sports or anything you would like to pursue. The university is close to downtown so there is a lot of exploring to do. It is really easy getting to know people. And it is also a very diverse and inclusive campus.
I was able to go to Austin with a girl from my course at QMU and we have now become friends for life. We both have gotten to know really amazing people who have been so eager to show us their culture. We also became friends with a group of Irish students who were also doing a study abroad program, so it was a great experience to share all together. By having this experience, I was able to do a lot more travelling around the U.S. Had the chance to visit NY which has always been on my bucket list, and also traveled to LA, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and San Antonio.
Advice to other students:
I personally love travelling and having new experiences. There is something really beautiful about embracing the unknown and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. If there is anything I would recommend to anyone thinking about doing a semester abroad is to take the opportunity if you can.
Do the research when contemplating where to go and take your time to get familiar with the place. It is worth it. You’ll meet people from around the world and just like I did, you will make friends for life. And more than anything is an experience of a lifetime.
