Sign Language Interpreting Short Courses
We offer asynchronous online short courses for Sign Language Interpreters. These are designed for interpreters who wish to develop their practice in specialist areas of interpreting. The short courses can form a valuable component of continuing professional development for interpreters. They are delivered asynchronously and do not involve any form of assessment.
Structure, delivery, duration and outcome
Structure: Each course is divided into five topic blocks.
Delivery: All courses are delivered asynchronously online.
Duration: Each course is delivered over one semester.
Outcome: These courses are non-credit bearing.
Courses running in Semester 1 - These options run from September to December each year:
- Interpreting in Healthcare Settings (0 credits at SCQF Level 11): This course runs in Semester One. The course provides participants with academic and non-academic material to support reflection on their professional practice in a range of healthcare contexts, including primary and secondary healthcare environments.
- Interpreting in Arts and Culture Settings (0 credits at SCQF Level 11): This course runs in Semester One. The course provides participants with academic and non-academic material to support the development of their professional practice in a wide range of both performative and non-performative cultural settings (including religion, sports, visual arts, dance, drama, music, poetry, literature, film and television).
Courses running in Semester 2 - These options run from January to March each year:
Interpreting in Mental Healthcare Settings (0 credits at SCQF Level 11): This course runs in Semester Two. The course provides participants with academic and non-academic material to support the development of their work in mental healthcare settings and consider the dynamics of interpreted interaction in a range of mental healthcare environments.
Interpreting in Employment Settings (0 credits at SCQF Level 11): This course runs in Semester Two. The course provides participants with academic and non-academic material to extend their knowledge of working effectively with deaf employees in a range of employment settings, and the social and political influences that impact on interpreters’ practice.

Entry requirements
Applicants would usually have professional experience as a sign language interpreter. However, some of these courses may also be of interest to those who are undertaking interpreter training.
Please note that the courses are delivered in English.

Fees are £230 charged per module for 2026/7 entry.
