Chi-Yun joined QMU in January 2026 after spending over 22 years at Sheffield Hallam University where she has taught Film Studies and served in various leadership roles.
Her PhD thesis (at Exeter) was on Britain's Diaspora Films, but her research interest has been transposed to South Korean cinema since early 2000s. As the co-editor of New Korean Cinema (Edinburgh University Press, 2005), which remains a key touchstone text, Chi-Yun was one of the very first scholars in the UK to raise the profile of South Korean cinema.
Her interests also expand more widely across Asian cinema, as is evidenced by later works such as the edited collection East Asian Film Noir (Bloomsbury, 2015). She has been instrumental in leading the turn to the study of South Korean women directors and organised the South Korean Women's Cinema conference (2021), funded by the Academy of Korean Studies.
Broadly speaking, the thread of transnational enquiry runs through Chi-Yun's research outputs, from her PhD thesis that explores the Black Diaspora Films of the 1980s and 1990s to the edited volume East Asian Film Noir: Transnational Encounters and International Dialogue.
Her work on Tartan 'Asia Extreme' Films, the influential UK distribution label and her 2019 article on the 2016 film The Handmaiden as a cross-cultural adaptation offer further evidence to her interest in transnational flow of cinema.
Chi-Yun is also committed to generating and disseminating knowledge about South Korean women's filmmaking history and their contribution to the profile of Korean cinema.
Her other interests include liminal spaces (staircases, rooftops, etc.) on screen; film festivals on East Asian cinema; and Korean horror films.
Chi-Yun is also a Full Member of the Culture in Society research centre.
