A Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh graduate has taken the next step towards a career in digital media production after securing a placement with The Scotsman during his final year of study.

Quinn Lorimer, from Edinburgh, graduated with a BA (Hons) Film and Media from QMU earlier this month. During his studies, he was selected for a coveted four-week internship place with The Scotsman through the University's partnership with the newspaper, which gives students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience covering the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Working alongside experienced journalists during the 2025 Festival Fringe, Quinn filmed and edited interviews with performers and created engaging digital content which impressed the Scotsman editorial team, leading to him securing a six-week placement with them in his fourth and final year at QMU.

Quinn said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the way film and media can capture people’s stories and create a connection with an audience. Studying at QMU allowed me to develop that passion while learning the technical skills needed to turn creative ideas into something tangible.

“The internship with The Scotsman was a real turning point for me. Working at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, surrounded by so many different performances and stories, gave me the chance to put my filming and editing skills into practice and experience the energy of a professional media environment.

“Being offered a placement afterwards was a huge confidence boost and a reminder of how valuable industry experience can be while studying. QMU gave me the opportunities and support to challenge myself creatively, and I’m excited to continue developing as a filmmaker and editor.”

During his placement with The Scotsman, Quinn worked on a diverse range of projects across Scotland, producing digital content at the Scottish Parliament, filming and editing features on the reopening of the Royal Yacht Britannia's new visitor centre and the Edinburgh Food and Drink Academy, and creating video content for the newspaper's online platforms.

One of the highlights of the placement was covering The Scotsman's hustings event ahead of the Scottish General Election, where Quinn filmed interviews and created social media content in front of a live audience. His work received immediate praise from the editorial team, reinforcing the confidence and skills he had developed during his time at QMU.

The placement with The Scotsman gave me the chance to work on such a wide variety of projects, which meant no two days were ever the same. It challenged me creatively and helped me become much more self-assured in my own abilities. Receiving such positive feedback from the team was incredibly rewarding because it showed me how much I'd grown, both technically and creatively. It gave me the confidence to trust my instincts and confirmed that editing is where my real passion lies. I'm excited to keep developing those skills and see where they take me next.
