Clinical excellence award caps successful route into radiotherapy career
Winning a top prize for clinical performance and securing a first-class honours award has capped a successful period of study for Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh graduate Bethany Thomas.
Bethany, from Welshpools, Powys, has graduated with an BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy and Oncology. Her achievement was further recognised with the VisionRT Award for Clinical Performance, an accolade presented to the student who demonstrates exceptional standards in clinical practice and patient-centred care.
The award, sponsored by VisionRT, a leading provider of surface-guided radiation therapy technology, recognises excellence in clinical placement performance and commitment to delivering high-quality patient care. As part of the award, Bethany received a prize voucher.
The 22 year-old celebrated her graduation with family and friends in July at Queen Margaret University's ceremony at Edinburgh's Usher Hall. She was joined by QMU Chancellor Patrick Grant, entrepreneur and judge on BBC One's ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’, as well as honorary graduate Professor Carolyn McDonald, former Chief Allied Health Professions Officer for the Scottish Government.
Reflecting on her time at QMU and receiving the award, Bethany said:
I’m really proud to receive the VisionRT Award for Clinical Performance. Caring for patients is what this job is really about for me, and I’ve learned that from the lecturers, clinical educators and fellow students at QMU as much as anything else. They didn’t just teach me the technical side, they helped me become someone who’s kind and gives individual, personalised care to every patient. I’m looking forward to starting my career in radiotherapy and oncology and carrying that same approach into everything I do.
Bethany fully deserves the VisionRT Award for Clinical Performance. It celebrates her consistent demonstration of exceptional clinical knowledge, professionalism and compassionate patient-centred care throughout her clinical placements.
Throughout her time at QMU, she demonstrated remarkable resilience, determination and commitment to her studies. The growth she showed year upon year, both academically and clinically, is truly exceptional. Her dedication to continually developing her knowledge, skills and confidence, alongside her unwavering focus on providing compassionate, high-quality patient care, made her a deserving recipient of this award.
The lecturing team is incredibly proud of everything Beth has achieved and has every confidence that she will make a valuable contribution to the profession as she begins the next stage of her journey.
