QMU invites local community to discover how film is inspiring the next generation
How can filmmaking help young people build confidence, develop new skills and find their creative voice? Local residents, community groups and anyone interested in the work of Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh are invited to explore this question at the University's next Community Forum on the 3rd November 2026.
Held twice a year, the Community Forum provides an opportunity for local residents and community representatives to engage directly with University staff, hear about QMU's teaching, research and community projects, and discuss issues of shared interest.
As part of the event, Dr Robert Munro, Senior Lecturer in Film and Media at QMU, will discuss how filmmaking can inspire and empower young people. Drawing on projects with schools in Edinburgh and Musselburgh, he will explore how creative filmmaking activities can help pupils develop confidence, creativity and practical skills. His talk will include insights from a collaboration with Edinburgh's Broughton High School that culminated in three student-made films premiering at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, as well as work with Stoneyhill Primary School in Musselburgh.
The presentation will also offer an insight into Dr Munro's wider research into film and media education in Scotland, and his work supporting teachers and educators to strengthen film education in schools and communities.
In addition to Dr Munro's presentation, attendees will receive updates on recent University activities that may be of interest to the local community and will have the opportunity to raise questions and discuss topics of shared interest with QMU representatives.
The online meeting will take place via Microsoft Teams from 6.30pm to 7.45pm on Tuesday 3 November 2026. Members of the public who would like to attend are asked to register by emailing marketing@qmu.ac.uk. Community members are also encouraged to share the invitation with others who may be interested in attending.
The QMU Community Forum is held twice a year and provides a platform for dialogue between Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh and the local community. The Forum brings together residents, community representatives, voluntary organisations and University staff to discuss projects, research and initiatives that support the region and contribute to community wellbeing.
