QMU leads national discussion on the future of responsible tourism

By Press Office

With responsible tourism high on the national agenda, Queen Margaret University (QMU) is bringing together key stakeholders from across Scotland on 16 June to help shape a more sustainable future for the sector.

Through a series of discussions and interactive sessions, the event, ‘Shaping the Future of Responsible Tourism’, will examine how the tourism sector can balance economic growth with social responsibility, workforce wellbeing and environmental sustainability, while creating positive outcomes for visitors, businesses, workers and local communities.

Hosted by the Queen Margaret Business School, the collaborative workshop will provide a platform for industry, policymakers, local authorities, researchers and communities to share experiences, discuss emerging challenges and identify practical solutions to support a more resilient and inclusive visitor economy.

Dr Majella Sweeney, Senior Lecturer at Queen Margaret Business School said: “Tourism plays a vital role in Scotland’s economy and communities. As the sector continues to evolve, it is important that growth is accompanied by a commitment to sustainability, community engagement and good employment practices. This workshop offers an opportunity for stakeholders from across the tourism ecosystem to come together, exchange knowledge and help shape a more responsible future for the industry.”

Key topics covered at the event will include workforce wellbeing and meaningful employment in tourism, skills development and talent attraction within the visitor economy, residents’ perceptions of tourism and community participation, and the adoption of sustainable practices that support responsible travel.

‘Shaping the Future of Responsible Tourism’ will take place at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh on Tuesday 16 June 2026 from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

The event is free to attend. Those interested in participating can register via Eventbrite.
