A degree of drama as Zoë graduates to become student president

By Press Office

Zoë MacCallum from Glasgow has just graduated with a BA (Hons) Drama from Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh. Not only did she achieve her honours degree, she’s secured the role of Student President with Queen Margaret University Students’ Union.

Twenty-one year old, Zoë, a former pupil of Stonelaw High school, Rutherglen, immersed herself in student life throughout her four year degree at QMU, holding the position of Societies Officer with the Students’ Union during her very busy final year.

I always wanted to study drama and I’ve loved every minute of my degree course. My time at QMU has been very special for me. I really liked the strong sense of community and the feeling of belonging that QMU is so well known for. You don’t get lost in the crowd at Queen Margaret and so it’s a great place to grow and develop both academically and personally.

Zoë threw herself into student life and was determined to get lots of experience that would ultimately enhance her employability. She enjoyed meeting and helping students so was delighted to take on the role of Societies Officer with the Students’ Union in her fourth year.

Her final year was particularly full on with dissertation work, exams, her participation in the End of Year Show, stage managing ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and campaigning for the Student President’s role.

Zoë was delighted to secure one of the top positions with the Students’ Union and will be working alongside fellow QMU graduate Silvia, who shares the Student President’s role – with Zoë overseeing the academic relations and Silvia overseeing sports and societies.

I’m delighted to have achieved my goal of getting my degree, but the icing on the cake has been securing my role as President of the Queen Margaret University Students’ Union. I’m really excited to be working alongside Silvia Cardinale and the SU team to deliver a great service and strong representation for our student body.

Zoë celebrated her degree success with her mum, dad and older sister Jodie who attended an impressive graduation ceremony at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall, followed by a reception on the University’s campus. The family were in good company at the ceremony on 8th July, as Zoe and her fellow graduates were also joined by Scottish actress and narrator, Ashley Jensen, and the former Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Fringe Society, Shona McCarthy, who were both awarded honorary degrees. Ashley Jensen, most recently known for her leading detective role in BBC’s much loved crime drama ‘Shetland’ was awarded Doctor of the University for her contributions to the arts, and Shona McCarthy, former Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Fringe Society, was honoured with a Doctor of the University for her visionary leadership in the arts and her profound impact on Scotland’s cultural landscape.
