On 19 November, the class of 2025–26 international scholars who have chosen Scotland as their academic home were celebrated at the Scotland Study UK International Scholars Reception held at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

Organised in partnership with British Council Scotland through the Study UK campaign, the event brought together over 150 international scholars representing prestigious programmes including Chevening, Commonwealth, and Women in STEM among others, for a vibrant evening of networking and cultural exchange.

Welcoming the scholars was Ben Macpherson MSP, the Scottish Government Minister for Higher and Further Education, who in his opening address, reaffirmed Scotland’s commitment to being a welcoming, inclusive destination for global talent.

He said: "What a fantastic celebration of Scotland's 2025 class of international scholars, and so fitting that it coincides with International Education Week. This event reflects the commitments set out in Scotland's International Education Strategy, which recognises the important and valuable contribution international students, staff and researchers make to the Scottish economy, educational environment, society and communities. As the scholars spend the next twelve months with us here in Scotland, I hope they consider this their home as much as it is ours."

He was joined by the Deputy Principal of QMU, Professor Richard Butt, and the British Council Scotland Director, Claire de Braekeleer, alongside representatives from Scotland’s universities, key stakeholders from Connected Scotland and members of the Scottish Government.

Professor Richard Butt, said: “International education is at the heart of Scotland’s global outlook, and last night’s event highlights the strength we draw from connecting people, ideas and cultures. These scholars bring extraordinary potential, and we are delighted they have chosen Scotland as the place to fulfil it. We look forward to the positive impact they will have on our universities, our communities and the wider world.

The evening also saw an inspiring speech from Queen Margaret University student, Diana Ndlovu. Originally from South Africa, Diana has received a Chevening scholarship which has allowed her to pursue a one-year Master’s degree in Political Communication and Public Affairs at QMU.

Diana said: "QMU has a unique way of making you feel instantly welcome. Through QMU's mentorship programme I was paired with an incredibly insightful mentor working in communications with the Scottish Government, which has helped me think more clearly about my career direction in communication and policy advocacy. Scotland itself has been a real joy to explore, from the breathtaking scenery to the welcoming people and rich culture. I'm genuinely glad I made the choice to study here."

Launched in 2016, Study UK is a national-level campaign that promotes the UK as a first-class study destination across the globe.
