Event shares insight into review of UK nursing
Nursing students and staff at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh will have the opportunity to learn about significant developments that are planned for the UK nursing profession at an on-campus event in November.
Professor Alex McMahon CBE, former Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland and honorary professor at Queen Margaret University (QMU), will discuss the changes that are being implemented by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the regulatory body which oversees the governance of nursing and midwifery in the UK. The event will look at the regulations and standards that govern nursing and midwifery practice and the significant changes that will take place in the coming year.
The event, held at QMU on 5th November, will see Professor McMahon, who is now the Independent Chair of the NMC Review of Practice Learning, outline the changes in key areas that are intended to enhancing nursing practice across Scotland and the rest of the UK. Professor Mahon will be joined by Julie Bliss, Senior Nursing Education Adviser with the NMC (Professional Practice Directorate), who will help lead the discussion.
The event will focus on the four main Nursing and Midwifery Council workstreams:
- Review of Practice Learning; (exploring how the NMC can best support student learning across the UK)
- Advanced Practice; (a review to consider the additional regulation of advanced nursing and midwifery practice – the complex, autonomous and expert roles that many experienced nurses and midwives carry out)
- Review to modernise The Code; (The professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives, and nursing associates)
- Review of Revalidation (the process that all nurses and midwives in the UK and nursing associates in England need to follow to maintain their registration with the NMC.)
Our students are being offered an exciting and distinctive opportunity to engage directly with senior figures in healthcare, gaining valuable insights into the planned developments within the nursing profession. This event will provide a meaningful look into how the Nursing and Midwifery Council shapes and advances the profession. We hope it will inspire our students to seek further opportunities to actively contribute to the future of nursing in the UK.
