Interview with international postgraduate student, Xu Cao, MSc Dietetics

By Press Office

Xu Cao from Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, China, is currently studying MSc Dietetics at QMU full-time over two years.

Xu gained her first degree in Nursing in China and worked as a Senior Staff Nurse in Qiqihar. In 2016, she gained a second degree in England, where she studied BSc Nutrition.

Why did you choose to study MSc Dietetics at QMU and study in Edinburgh/Scotland?

“I chose QMU because it has an international reputation for academic excellence and was one of the few universities that was able to deliver the dietetics subject at master’s degree level.

“I have previous experience of living and studying in both China and England. I now want to experience something different in Scotland and the city of Edinburgh, which is known around the world for its rich history and culture. It also offers a great opportunity for me to meet new friends with different cultural backgrounds from all over the world.”

What are the highlights of your time at QMU so far?

“The dietetics tutors at QMU are world class and absolutely professional. I always look forward to my lectures. The whole experience of life at QMU is so enjoyable and I believe that living and studying in this part of the world is the most enjoyable experience of my life.

“As well as studying, I’m taking every opportunity to explore the area, visiting various sites, sampling the culture and tasting local food produce.”

How do you find the workload?

“Personally, I find the workload intense but it is manageable by balancing my time efficiently. This is made easier for me by living on campus, which saves me travelling time. I’ve found the library and IT staff very supportive – if I need help I know there is always someone available to support me.”

How do you think the course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to pursue your chosen career?

“This course will provide me with a direct entry into my dream career as a dietician. It enhances my previous degree courses in nursing and nutrition and will provide me with better career opportunities, enhancing my employment prospects. It will also provide me with the ability to study at PhD level.”

What are your plans after graduating from QMU?

“Once I’ve completed my course I’d like to travel around Scotland visiting famous areas such as the Highlands before starting work as a dietician. I’m also considering further study if possible at QMU, either at PhD level or another master’s degree related to nutrition, health and wellbeing.”
