The Edinburgh Festival Fringe was created in 1947 by eight theatre companies which had not been invited to perform at the Edinburgh Internal Festival. The Fringe was established with the ethos that anyone should able to  perform at the festival if they would like to. It is now the largest arts festival in the world, and the third largest event in the world. Only the Summer Olympics and FIFA World Cup have a greater attendance.
