Vintage Microscope

This is a vintage microscope that we have stored in our archives here at QMU. Equipment such as this was used to train nurses through the Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Institute for Nurses, which was founded in 1887 and was the precursor of the modern district nursing service. QMU’s founders were closely involved in the Institute.

In its first year of existence, its Edinburgh branch had paid 7517 visits to 321 cases, and by 1891 there were 12 branches active in Scotland. By 1897, 187 nurses were operating in Scotland.  Nursing remains a core flank of QMU’s teaching and research work to this day.
