Queen Margaret University Tartan
The Queen Margaret University tartan commemorates the creation of the University in 2007.
The institution that became Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh was originally established in 1875 by pioneering women Christian Guthrie Wright and Louisa Stevenson.
Features from the tartans associated with their names, MacIntyre and Ayrshire District respectively, have been included in the design. The colours used reflect the institutions corporate colours of blue, silver and white. Green was added to reflect the University’s commitment to sustainability, and the design also features purple, from Scotland’s traditional thistle emblem. Green and purple are also associated with the women's suffrage movement, relevant given the connections of our founders with the 19th century women's movement.
The tartan was designed in Scotland by Kinloch Anderson, Scotland’s foremost experts in highland dress.
