I joined Queen Margaret University to become a lecturer in teacher education. Although originally a teacher of Geography and Outdoor Education, my move to join the university came from many years in school leadership and management, laterally in Scotland, but previous to that in the independent sector and in Ethiopia.
I have been fortunate over the years to work with a wide range of people and in different contexts but throughout this my interests have been around ‘ bridging the gap’ between academic research and school practice particularly in research areas of rural education and equity of access to professional development opportunities, outdoor learning and place based education. I have stayed true to my routes in outdoor learning and continue to organise and lead expeditions overseas in my other role as a member of the British Association of International Mountain Leaders.

My research focuses on issues around rural education, place based education and equity of opportunity. My doctoral thesis is on how undertaking a small-scale practitioner enquiry during the first year of teaching can influence the formation of probationer teachers’ professional identity and their classroom practices. I am a strong proponent of grounded theory methodology in relation to understanding lived experiences in education.

I will be teaching on modules on the undergraduate courses in education including the Introduction to Education Studies in 21 Century for year 1, Everyday life contexts: A problem solving approach to mathematics and The creative curriculum: planning for assessment & continuity for year 3.
