New global film master's at QMU to address key industry skill shortages

A dynamic new master's course that will address the skills gap in the global film industry is to be offered by a Scottish university.
The MSc Global Film Industries degree being launched by Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh will appeal to those already working across a variety of areas within the industry and will provide students with a critical and practical study of contemporary global film cultures and histories of cinema while emphasising the place of the Scottish industry in the world. Importantly, it will focus on roles identified as key skills gaps, such as entrepreneurship, marketing and project management, thereby helping to close the skills gap which currently exists both in the UK and internationally.
Those who enrol in the programme can expect to be taught by well-established and award-winning lecturers specialised in Scottish and UK film industries, entrepreneurial strategies and global cinema networks. At the same time, the MSc is designed to meet both current industry practice and its future developments.
The MSc Global Film Industries has also been designed with career options in mind; those already working within the industry will be equipped with the leadership skills and have the opportunity to develop the managerial practice required to progress to senior level in areas including pre-production (finance, location), distribution (marketing, sales), exhibition (cinema, festival management), policy or film education.
Dr Stefanie Van De Peer, Joint Programme Leader and former Director of the Africa in Motion film festival and MONA film festival, said: "Students on our new MSc course can expect their creativity and entrepreneurship to be nurtured in a collaborative and supportive learning environment, which will encourage them to move beyond their comfort zones."
"At QMU, we also support students to establish their own businesses," added Dr Michael Stewart, Co-Programme Leader and current peer reviewer on a variety of international film journals. "Our course will deepen and expand students' knowledge of film as culture, capital, and field of employment, in addition to strongly positioning them within the local and global film industries."
