Dovecot Studios reception event celebrates student support at QMU

By Press Office

Students, staff and donors of Queen Margaret University (QMU), Edinburgh, gathered for a celebratory reception event last week at Edinburgh's Dovecot Studios.

Currently in its sixth year, the reception is a unique opportunity for donors and students to celebrate the impact of philanthropy. The evening recognised the talents of current QMU students who have recently received awards, bursaries and scholarships, supported through philanthropic donations.

Around a hundred guests were in attendance from across the QMU community, ranging from current students and recent graduates to past and present members of University senior management and donors.

Speeches were made by the University's Principal and Vice-Chancellor – Sir Paul Grice – as well as 2nd year BA (Hons) International Hospitality & Tourism Management student Robert Barron (recipient of a Robertson Trust scholarship), MSc Gastronomy student Robin Sherriff who was supported by funding from the Vice-Chancellor's International Travel Fund to conduct research for his dissertation overseas, and Hannah Gordon from QMU's MSc International Management and Leadership programme. Hannah received support from the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Fund and the Edinburgh Merchant Company towards the development of her business Crossroad Games, a game design company and social enterprise that creates imaginative, digital, visual novels for their clients.

During the evening, guests were able to enjoy impressive views of the Studios' grand weaving floor – home to a renowned tapestry studio – from the second-floor balcony where the event took place. The viewing balcony also currently features an exhibition on the art and life of May Morris.

Sir Paul Grice said: "Since joining the University in October last year, I have been astounded by the incredible support that QMU receives from alumni, friends and donors; they are having a life-changing impact on our current students, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to celebrate with them."
