Open Access Course ‘Caring For My Bones’ to Launch on 21st January 2019
Queen Margaret University's (QMU) Nursing, Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) and Centre for Academic Practice (CAP) collaboration is set to launch a new Open Access course focused on osteoporosis later this month.
‘Caring For My Bones’ - which launches on 21 January 2019 - is an important offshoot from the Lydia Osteoporosis Project, an extensive programme of research and education at QMU, ongoing since 2012, and generously supported by donations from anonymous individual benefactors.
Osteoporosis is a disease which causes increased fracture risk and is highly prevalent in older people. With people, worldwide, living longer than ever before, osteoporosis and fractures are an ever increasing public health concern.
The course seeks to expand health and social care practitioners’ awareness of osteoporosis and implications for practice, enabling them to translate knowledge into actions which place the person at the centre of the care process. Emphasis is placed on the promotion of bone health and minimisation of fracture risk through mobility, and safe and effective moving and handling.
'Caring For My Bones' draws on QMU's strong links with specialist practitioners in osteoporosis, fracture liaison, falls prevention and manual handling, academic staff and learning technologists. Additionally, members of the public affected by osteoporosis will also provide invaluable insight into what it's like to live with the condition.
The course is available to all practitioners, and there is scope to extend learning by drawing on excellent learning which include bespoke moving and handling practice simulations, narrated presentations, opportunities to participate in discussion groups, and links to key literature and significant developments in this exciting and progressive specialty.
