QMU to offer new master’s degree in media management

By Jane Scott

A new course focusing on developing an understanding of media and creative businesses and the global environment in which they operate is now available at Queen Margaret University (QMU), meeting demand from a sector that is predicted to be worth £76 billion by 2022.

The first qualification of its kind available in Edinburgh, the new master’s degree aims to equip graduates with the business skills required to pursue a management career in the media and creative industries.

According to the latest PwC annual industry report, the UK entertainment and media sector is currently growing at 3.2% annually. The UK creative industry is growing at four times the rate of the UK workforce as whole, according to latest official statistics from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Dr David Stevenson, Head of Media, Communication and Performing Arts at QMU, said: “This degree is part of our new suite of courses created to reflect the industry’s changing employment landscape and is aimed at people interested or already employed in international media industries, as well as advertising, marketing and other associated careers. The course brings together the study of media industries with an analysis of business processes and participants will gain insight and learn the management skills that the sector needs.”

This new MSc builds on QMU’s suite of postgraduate communications courses including the long-established MSc Strategic Communication and Public Relations, MA Arts, Festival and Cultural Management and the new MSc Digital Campaigning and Content Creation. The MSc Media Management course can be studied on a full or part-time basis, and potential students can apply via the course page.
