By Press Office

Christos Theodorakopoulos, 31, is from Kalamata in Greece and is currently studying for a PhD in the Dietetics, Nutrition and Biological Sciences Department at QMU.

Thanks to the Princess Alice Award, Christos was able to attend the second International Movement and Nutrition Society (IMNS) Conference at University of Regensburg in Regensburg, Germany in 2016.

The Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, Scholarship, is an annual award which aims to fund, either wholly or in part (to a maximum of £1000), overseas research-related initiatives which are likely to advance knowledge and/or have a positive impact on people’s lives. Applications are open to current postgraduate and research students of QMU, as well as recent graduates of the University who obtained their qualifications not more than three years ago.

Commenting on how the Princess Alice Award benefitted him, Christos said: “Attending the second International conference on Movement and Nutrition in Health and Disease was a very rewarding experience. It gave me the opportunity to expand my scientific horizons, enhance my presentation skills, exchange views and get new research ideas.

“It also allowed me to promote the work of QMU to an international audience, including details of how the University is actively pursuing research projects that can promote the long-term health of our societies. One example of this is how we help vulnerable groups with lifestyle interventions, such as community-based nutrition and exercise programmes.”

As well as networking with researchers from other institutions at the conference, Christos was able to share his work and QMU’s areas of scientific expertise with world-famous scientists and top-ranking institutions, including the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, University of Iceland, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, University of Miami, USA and Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan.
