EU Referendum: Guidance
On 23 June 2016 the UK electorate voted in a national referendum to leave the European Union. There is no immediate, material change for our staff, students and EU-funded activities.
QMU is an outward looking, internationally focused university that values our European students and connections greatly, recognising their crucial contribution to our academic and cultural richness. The guidance below for prospective students, current students and staff was updated on 22 December 2016.
APPLICANTS
Undergraduate students starting in academic year 2016/17: On 1 July 2016, the Scottish Government announced that eligible EU students commencing in 2016 will continue to benefit from free tuition, and, for those who meet the residency requirement, associated living cost support. Those assessed as eligible will remain so for the duration of their course. You must apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for funding. Undergraduate students entering in academic year 2017/18: On 14 October 2016, the Scottish Government announced that eligible EU students commencing in 2017 will continue to benefit from free tuition for the duration of their course. Those who meet the residency requirement will also continue to benefit from associated living cost support. Those assessed as eligible will remain so for the duration of their course. You must apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for funding. For guidance on eligibility and funding please visit the SAAS website.
Postgraduate EU students entering in 2016/17 and 2017/18: The home fee rate will continue to apply to UK and EU students.

Postgraduate EU students 2017: Full time EU students will continue to be eligible to apply for the SAAS tuition fee loan for the academic year 2017-18. This funding will also be available to EU students undertaking postgraduate study in Scotland on a part time basis over two years. For more information, see this article from the Scottish Government.
CURRENT STUDENTS

Current postgraduate EU students: The home fee rate will continue to apply to UK and EU students.
EU students studying in the UK under the Erasmus programme: your status has not changed, and you continue to be eligible for your Erasmus grant until at least as long as we remain a member of the EU and possibly beyond that point.
UK students studying in the EU and elsewhere under the Erasmus programme: your status has not changed, and you will continue to be eligible for your Erasmus grant until at least as long as we remain a member of the EU and possibly beyond that point.
EU STAFF
The status of EU staff has not changed as a result of the vote. This will remain the case unless the UK Government decides otherwise.
RESEARCH
All staff currently undertaking EU funded projects: the UK’s status as a full participating member of the Horizon 2020 programme has not changed as a result of the referendum vote. Existing project grants and contracts will be honoured unless or until advised otherwise. Detailed advice on prospective and currently negotiated projects will be circulated as soon as is possible by Universities UK, which is liaising with the UK Research Office and European Commission.
