SOS Ecuador: Ecuadorian Students in the UK together with ##FuerzaEcuador

By Press Office

QMU student, Estefania Arregui Alvarez, has teamed up with other Ecuadorian students around the UK to raise money for the victims of the recent earthquake in Ecuador.

On Saturday 16th April, a powerful earthquake (7.8 on the Richter scale) shook Ecuador’s northwestern coast, with up to 535 aftershocks to date. For the country, this is the worst catastrophe it has endured in the last four decades.

More than 655 people have been killed, over 5,000 have been injured and about 29,000 people made homeless. About 1500 buildings, including homes, hospitals and schools have either been destroyed or severely damaged.

Hundreds of Ecuadorian students in the UK, with the support of the Ecuadorian Embassy, have come together to raise funds for their country as it faces this arduous humanitarian challenge. They are asking you to join in and help contribute to their cause #FuerzaEcuador.

On Saturday 30th April (11am-6pm), Estefania and other Ecuadorian students will be hosting a Charity Bake Sale for the SOS Ecuador appeal at the University of Edinburgh, Holyrood North Residence Hall, 9 Holyrood Rd, Edinburgh, EH8 8FQ. Other fundraising events are being planned over the next few weeks.

All donations will be directed to increase the capacity of emergency teams deployed in affected areas. These funds will assist to provide vital aid to people in need, and hopefully, return some peace into their lives.

Help support #FuerzaEcuador. This is an official initiative run by students in different universities in the UK with the support of the Ecuadorian Embassy.
