QMU to host 12th European Music Therapy Conference in 2022

By Press Office

Queen Margaret University (QMU) is delighted to announce that the British Association for Music Therapy will host the 12th European Music Therapy Conference at the University’s campus in Edinburgh in 2022.

This prestigious conference attracts colleagues from across Europe and beyond, and over past decades has offered a unique space for growing music therapists, professional and disciplinary identity, knowledge and expertise internationally.

QMU is the only music therapy training provider in Scotland. Music therapy is situated within the School of Health Sciences and the Division of Occupational Therapy and Arts Therapies, and over the years has attracted students from across Europe and beyond. Renowned for relevant research and knowledge exchange work which focuses on making a positive impact on society, QMU has widely recognised expertise in health and rehabilitation, as well as creativity and culture. QMU has become a dynamic hub for music therapy in the country with a growing international reputation.

Hosting the 2022 conference in the UK is fitting for a number of different reasons. In 1992 the European conference took place in Cambridge and this is where the decision to organise the conference every three years was made. Both Prof Helen Odell-Miller and the late Prof Tony Wigram were among the European pioneers spearheading these developments. In 2022, and as the conference ‘returns’ to the UK, we will be celebrating an important 30th anniversary. This anniversary will offer a wonderful opportunity to reflect and honour the past, the present and the future of music therapy nationally and internationally.

Dr Philippa Derrington and Dr Giorgos Tsiris – both Senior Lecturers in Music Therapy in the Occupational Therapy & Arts Therapies Division at QMU – chair the organising and the scientific committees of the conference respectively.

The conference will be hosted at the University on 8-12 June 2022. Further information about the conference will be made available at a later date.
