HECert Mammography

This course is intended for Assistant Practitioners (AP’s) working in the breast imaging service. Successful completion of the course gives the skills and knowledge required to contribute to the provision of a uniformly high quality of care to all clients.

Assistant Practitioners work to an agreed scope of practice under the supervision of a practitioner, this supervision may be either direct or indirect. The mammographic techniques covered on this course are those required to produce routine radiographic images of the breast within a breast imaging service. 

Further education and training is required by those wishing to undertake imaging additional to the routine cranio-caudal and medio-lateral oblique projections.

About the course

This course is delivered using a blended learning approach; Lectures introduce theoretical concepts; specialist talks give an insight on identified areas of Breast Imaging; tutorials explore some syllabus areas in more depth and practical learning takes place within the student’s workplace. Work-based learning is continuous throughout the course. During this time students are encouraged to practice skills, which have been discussed during academic blocks, so that they will have ample opportunity for reflective practice. The virtual learning environment is utilised to ensure that support and resources are available for all students. 

Teaching, learning and assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used including electronic exams, essays and work-based portfolios.

This course is delivered using a blended learning approach; Lectures introduce theoretical concepts; specialist talks give an insight on identified areas of Breast Imaging; tutorials explore some syllabus areas in more depth and practical learning takes place within the student’s workplace. Work-based learning is continuous throughout the course. During this time students are encouraged to practice skills, which have been discussed during academic blocks, so that they will have ample opportunity for reflective practice.

The virtual learning environment is utilised to ensure that support and resources are available for all students.

Teaching hours and attendance

The course combines practice and classroom based learning and runs for approx. 15 months.

During this time students attend for a minimum of

  • Two blocks of classes·       
  • One week of practical training

Classes take place at the Scottish Academy of Breast Imaging (SABI). The practical training week will be allocated either to Glasgow or South East Scotland Breast Screening Centre, Edinburgh. The remainder of the training takes place in the students workplace.

Modules

The course consists of six modules at SCQF Level 7:-

·         Production of the X-Ray Image (20 credits)

·         Communication (20credits)

·         Client Care (20 credits)

·         Imaging Support (20 credits)

·         Mammography Practice (30 credits)

·         Health Issues in Breast Imaging (10 credits)

Imaging Support and Mammography Practice are work based modules that are supported by the remaining academic modules. All the modules reflect the link between theory and practice to form an integrated whole.

Entry requirements

Candidates must:

  • Have obtained 2 passes at SQA Higher level or equivalent;
  • Be employed in a clinical environment offering mammography experience;
  • Negotiate a contract with the manager of the clinical department to ensure that the required amount of time and patient load to complete the work-based element of the course will be made available.
  • Demonstrate recent personal development and a desire to further progress.

English language requirements:

Applicants must be able to communicate in English to the standard equivalent to level 6.5 of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no element below 6.5.

Links with industry/professional bodies

The course is recognised by the Society of Radiographers and can be used as evidence for accreditation as an Assistant Practitioner

Careers

Students undertaking this course will be in employment within the breast imaging service. Successful completion of this course will allow them to be accredited as assistant practitioners.
