About You

I completed an undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Edinburgh straight from secondary school. At this point I really was not sure what career path I was aiming for. I worked for a year in between my undergraduate degree and postgraduate degree as a full-time laboratory research technician. It was during this time that I aimed to find a career that I wanted to pursue. After research into different careers and work experience I knew dietetics was for me. I have a passion for nutrition, health and medicine and knew that I wanted a career working with the general public. As I had already carried out my undergraduate degree in Edinburgh and was working there, I wanted to continue studying within this city therefore I chose QMU. I had positive feedback from previous students at QMU and knew it would be a great place to study.

"My favourite part of the course was definitely the NHS placements which furthered my knowledge and skills learnt from university and showed me how to apply these to real-life situations. Alongside lectures, the course contains a mixture of practical examples and practical assignments."

The Course

As this was a postgraduate degree, the work load was high but QMU dietetic tutors provided a lot of support to meet achievable deadlines. As I had been employed prior to the course, I did not work alongside studying but around 50% of my course did uphold part-time employment during the course which did not affect their work.

My favourite part of the course was definitely the NHS placements which furthered my knowledge and skills learnt from university and showed me how to apply these to real-life situations. Alongside lectures, the course contains a mixture of practical examples and practical assignments. The lecture content covers a wide variety of clinical conditions which are applicable to your learning when out on placement. It also helped with acknowledging the areas of dietetics that I wanted to develop my career in.

If I was to give any top tips for prospective students I would say if you have a passion for dietetics and understand what the job involves, then this course at QMU strongly equips you with the knowledge and skills to take into NHS placements and supports you through your studying.

 Life after Graduation

After graduation I hope to find my first graduate dietitian post. I am looking forward to the opportunities and different fields that I can specialise within in the future.
