I am a staff nurse who has worked in critical care for over ten years. A significant part of my role involves the mentoring and teaching of both undergraduate student nurses, and staff nurses new to the intensive care environment.

This is the part of my job which I most enjoy, and as a result, I decided to do the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional and Higher Education, with an aim to improving the effectiveness of my teaching.

I chose to come to Queen Margaret University for a number of reasons: I was aware of QMU’s excellent reputation in teaching. In addition, the campus is located near where I live and is easily accessible. The course was personally recommended to me by a number of former students working within education in NHS Lothian.

Two years ago, I enrolled in the MSc Professional and Higher Education which commenced in September 2014. I have recently successfully completed the Postgraduate Certificate part of this programme.

The Course

I was made aware that by completing the Postgraduate Certificate, I would be eligible to apply for teacher status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and in addition, this would allow me to apply for fellowship with the Higher Education academy (HEA). I am delighted to say I have achieved both of these within in the last few weeks!!

I feel this course has greatly influenced my teaching practices in my work environment. I believe it has provided me with a solid foundation in teaching and learning theory. The modules themselves, although challenging, have given me considerable insight into how I can modify my teaching activities in order to maximise students’ learning in my workplace, offering practical suggestions as well as a theoretical foundation.

The learning activities are extremely flexible which is important for many of us who work as well as study. I have found that I have been able to successfully manage my learning activities around my work and my personal life.

The academic support available throughout from the outset has been nothing short of outstanding. I have worked closely with my allocated personal tutor and the wider professional and higher education teaching team. Throughout, I have found tutors to be extremely approachable, always helpful and supportive, and quick to respond to any questions I have had.

Life after Graduation:

Initially, I had intended only to do the Postgraduate Certificate component of this MSc programme, however as a result of my positive experiences throughout the previous two years, I have decided to continue on with my MSc. I see my future career in education and I believe that by continuing my studies at QMU, this will further enhance my career opportunities and prospects in the future.
