About You

I am an occupational therapist, and when working clinically I began the MSc in Palliative Care, initially only to do one module, then the PgCert and then I caught the learning and studying bug and completed the whole MSc! I chose this master’s which is run collaboratively between St Columba’s Hospice and QMU as a colleague had studied part of the programme and recommended it to me.  I am a former graduate of QMC (now QMU) so felt an affiliation with QMU as it is now.

The Course

During the programme I moved to work in higher education, and may not have been considered for the post had I not been working towards my master’s degree. I was able to tailor the modules I then did to my new education focused role.  The support available from the teaching staff at St Columba’s was outstanding, and I was a little bit nervous about making the transition to studying at QMU after completing the core modules at the hospice however the standard of support there was equally as good.  Studying part-time and working full-time is never easy, but all of the modules linked with, and enhanced my work, and vice versa.  I received a mixture of funding throughout the programme from my employers and also charities which I applied to.

Life after Graduation

Graduation was the most wonderful day, I’ll never forget it! I have presented posters on my work from the MSc at conferences both in the UK and abroad (Japan no less!), and now have an honorary contract with St Columba’s Hospice which has a broad remit of clinical and education roles.  Studying for an MSc has undoubtedly aided my career progression into higher education, it has widened my network of professional contacts, and developed me as a person leading to exciting travel opportunities.
