Erasmus+ MSc Global Health

Do you want to study a master's programme but are not able to leave your job or home for a full year? This new programme offers an ideal solution so you can benefit from a balanced blended teaching programme which is given partly on location and partly by innovative distance learning methods.

What is a blended learning MSc Global Health?

 The Erasmus+ blended master's programme is a one year full-time programme that requires you to be away from home for only 3 months. It consists of three months (September- December 2017) of core modules at QMU after which further modules and a thesis are completed through online learning at the three participating institutes in Scotland, Norway and the Netherlands.

Who is this programme for?

If you are a health professional (for example medical doctor, nurse or a midwife) or have a social science background and you want to develop your career in the field of global health, then this programme is designed for you.

Special focus for 2017: Conflict and Health

Semester Two of the Erasmus+ MSc Global Health at QMU has a special focus on conflict and health. Building on the core modules of global health, the second semester provides an in-depth analysis of the current challenges and policy debates in responses to meeting the health needs of populations affected by instability and conflict. In countries affected by political and social conflict health and wellbeing of displaced and vulnerable populations are at high risk.

Qualitative Research Methods for Global Public Health (e-learning)

The course gives an overview of qualitative research designs and presents various qualitative research methods and approaches. The course will demonstrate the use of these methods in the planning of health promotive and preventive interventions. Different approaches in coding and analysis of data obtained from qualitative research will be demonstrated and practiced in exercises. The strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research approaches will be discussed. The course includes both taught and practice sessions. Students will design a mini research project and will apply qualitative methods in a fieldwork research exercise.

Queen Margaret University:

Rebuilding Health Systems – Analysing the challenges in disrupted states (e-learning)

Rebuilding health systems following conflict raises significant challenges to meeting the urgent health needs of the population. This online module provides participants the opportunity to examine these challenges and the policy debates regarding interventions in these complex environments. Through critical analysis, accepted theory and practice and alternative approaches and frameworks will be explored and foundations for good practice identified.


KIT (Royal Tropical Institute):

Rebuilding Disrupted Health Systems (RDHS) – “developing context-specific strategies for health care policies, implementation and governance” (e-learning)

This course strengthens you to address health system challenges in complex emergencies and fragile states. To prepare you for improving these challenging situations we will analyse roles and strategies of key actors, humanitarian aid and politics, and human rights policies. You will thus become able to develop context-specific strategies for rebuilding disrupted health systems.

Psychosocial Interventions for Displaced Populations (e-learning)

The module seeks to promote competencies for the advocacy, conceptualisation, planning, implementation and evaluation of psychosocial programmes for war-affected populations and displaced persons. For more info see:

Entry Requirements

Honours degree or diploma, preferably in a health related area. Diplomates should have completed the final exam of a professional body. Applicants from other backgrounds (eg social science, social anthropology) are also welcomed, if they can demonstrate understanding/ experience of health issues.

International:  Students whose first language is not English are required to take an IELTS test receiving a minimum overall score of 6.0 and no individual component score below 5.5.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment

Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises and projects. Assessment is continuous and incorporates assignments, action plans, projects and examinations. For their dissertation projects, students can chose to collect desk-based studies or conduct primary data collection in collaboration with national or international organisations working in health and development.

Teaching Hours and Attendance

Each module which you study on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part time. Modules usually require two sessions of three hours in class plus around 10-12 hours of work each week consisting of preparatory class work with colleagues and on web based learning platforms as well as independent study. Subsequent to class contact, 4 weeks are given to prepare the written assignment.

As a graduate you will be well equipped to work as an international health practitioner or as a senior health manager or policy maker in a developing country or one in economic transition. Graduates have attained such positions as: health programme manager; humanitarian co-ordinator; civil society programme manager; research and advocacy officer; donor agency health advisor and a variety of advanced positions within home ministries and educational institutions.
