PgDip/ MSc Community Health and Wellbeing (Advancing Practice in Healthcare Framework)

In the Academic year of 2019-20 the Division of Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Radiography (DPPR) is launching an exciting, educationally and practice relevant award pathway in Community Health and Wellbeing. Further information on the postgraduate framework can be found on our Framework overview page.

This award pathway will be of interest to any individual who wishes to advance their practice in the area of community health and wellbeing.

The Community Health and Wellbeing pathway is one of a number of award pathways offered within our multi-professional Advancing Practice in Health Framework.

The Community Health and Wellbeing pathway is based on a model of collaborative multi-professional learning aligned to expectations of the four pillars of advanced practice (Clinical Practice, Leadership, Education and Research). There are learning opportunities in areas such as fundamentals of advanced practice, critical analysis, evaluation and research methodologies, as well as a number of more specific modules. The Framework also offers opportunities to draw on expertise across the University such as business management, leadership, social science and education.

The Community Health and Wellbeing award pathway aims to foster and develop QMU’s vision of ideas and influence and its mission of cultivating intellectual capital with both a theoretical and practical focus. Learning and teaching is underpinned by research, evidence and scholarship against a background of the current and evolving political and social landscape for health and wellbeing.

The Community Health and Wellbeing award pathway offers flexibility in modes of study (part time, full time, work place) that are responsive to individual needs and today’s culture of work and learning.

All modules are delivered online and can be studied from a distance.

Additional support is available for those new to or returning to master's level study.

PgDip/ MSc

To gain an MSc Advancing Practice in Community Health and Wellbeing you will need a 180 credits and will complete the following modules:  

  • Fundamentals of advancing practice (20 credits)
  • Enquiry based practice (20 credits)
  • Community Health & Wellbeing Theory (20 credits)
  • Realistic Medicine (20 credits)
  • Demonstrating impact in Practice (20 credits)
  • Optional module (20 credits)
  • Dissertation (60 credits)

To gain a PgDip Advancing Practice in Community Health and Wellbeing you will need a 120 credits and will complete the following modules:

  • Fundamentals of advancing practice (20 credits)
  • Enquiry based practice (20 credits)
  • Community Health & Wellbeing Theory (20 credits)
  • Realistic Medicine (20 credits)
  • Demonstrating impact in Practice (20 credits)
  • Optional module (20 credits)

To gain a PgCert Advancing Practice in Health you will need a total of 60 credits of any framework approved modules (Dissertation module not applicable).

 

Structure

To obtain a specific postgraduate award at QMU you must complete a number of credit bearing modules. You can opt to study for the full MSc or a PgDip. You can also register as an associate student to complete a single module for CPD. On completion of a single module, you may wish to complete further modules and progress your studies to a named award.

Teaching, learning and assessment

All modules are delivered online.

Teaching hours and attendance

No attendance is required at QMU and course material is delivered online. Each 20 credit module will equate with approximately 200 hours of study, which will include regular online contact and independent experiential learning.

Modules

Community Health and Wellbeing Theory (20 credits): This module will enable learners to advance their own practice by gaining a critical understanding of theory related to community health and wellbeing policy and practice.

Delivering Impact in Practice (20 credits): This module will enable learners to advance their practice by demonstrating sustainable impact in practice at a service, project or community level.

Dissertation (60 credits): This module enables learners to develop and apply the skills of research and enquiry to produce original work which contributes to a subject, field or profession.

Enquiry-based Practice (20 credits): This module will provide you with an understanding of research principles, methodologies and analysis.

Fundamentals of Advancing Practice (20 credits): This module will provide you with critical knowledge and understanding of advanced practice.

Realistic Medicine (20 credits): This module will enable learners to advance their practice by critically evaluating, designing, delivering and reflecting on interventions at the individual level to improve health outcomes related to lifestyle behaviours.

Optional module (20 credits): choice of framework approved module (see Framework page for further information).

Entry requirements

Honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline

International: English language: IELTS >6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element)

Some modules may require individuals to be working in the specific area of practice and have the support of a line manager and work place mentor.

Professional registration

Framework awards do not lead to UK registration with the HCPC or the right to practice within the UK, but aim to foster an intellectual approach to personal and professional development.
