Ms Gail Carin-Levy (BSc (Hons), SFHEA) is a Senior Lecturer in the Occupational Therapy & Arts Therapies Division. She is also a member of the Centre for Applied Social Sciences (Full member).

Gail joined QMU in 2005, following a varied career of research and clinical roles in occupational therapy. Prior to training as an occupational therapist, Gail spent 20 years of her life in Israel, where she pursued a variety of interests, as a welfare officer during national service as well as a SCUBA diving instructor. Both these roles led to Gail’s interest in human occupation as well as education.

As an occupational therapist, Gail has worked both in acute hospital settings and community services and has always had a special interest in stroke and early supported discharge from hospital. Gail has also extensive research experience gathered during her time as a research assistant at the University of Edinburgh where she project managed research utilising a variety of methods.  Gail’s roles within the division of Occupational Therapy and Arts Therapies include Level 1 coordination, contribution to the admissions team, and education on both undergraduate and post-graduate programmes.

Gail has a wide range of experiences in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies with a particular interest in mixed methods research. Currently, Gail is in the closing stretches of a part-time PhD on the identification of Post Stroke Delirium (a mixed methods programme). Additionally, Gail is working on generating the 5th edition of Muscles, Nerves and Movement in Human Occupation, a textbook widely used in the OT education in the UK and overseas.

Her research interests are evident from her publications in peer-reviewed journals: Stroke care particularly delirium after stroke, life after stroke, and, the engagement in a variety of purposeful activities. Gail supervises both undergraduate and postgraduates students on a range of topics, utilising a wide range of methodologies.

  • Life after stroke, delirium in acute stroke, participation in occupation in later life

Research Methods:

  • Mixed methods, systematic review and meta-analysis, observational studies, survey, descriptive phenomenology, abbreviated grounded theory.

Gail is level leader for the first year of UG OT. Gail lectures in various areas of focus, but specialises in anatomy, applied physiology, and pathophysiology of conditions that are relevant to the practice of Occupational Therapy. Gail particularly enjoys working with foundation year students and has been praised for her innovative and engaging teaching methods. Gail takes a keen interest in curriculum design and is always striving to improve upon the methods of teaching and assessment utilised in the undergraduate programme in particular. This has led to Gail embracing a wide variety of technological advances which have improved the student experience in the foundation years.
