Jacqui Pentland is an experienced occupational therapist and researcher. Jacqui joined QMU in 2009 to take up a research practitioner post in the Division of Occupational Therapy and Arts Therapies, before which she worked as a community Occupational Therapist in Edinburgh. Jacqui’s initial research was an action research grant with children’s services focusing on child centred outcomes and increasing parent and teacher involvement. This resulted in the development of a redesigned service pathway and a new assessment tool. The assessment tool was subsequently used as part of a national dissemination and evaluation project.

Jacqui is currently co-leading a research collaborative called Making it CLEAR- community living, enablement and resilience (MiC)’. The aim of MiC is to enable people to live well within their communities by better understanding what supports them to remain resilient. The research resulted in the development of a psychometrically tested resilience assessment tool and intervention manual.

In 2013 Jacqui completed an MSc degree in Occupational Therapy based on her resilience research and gained a place on the Professional Doctorate course at QMU. She holds a diploma in Management and Leadership from the Chartered Management Institute.

Jacqui is exploring the impact that research and practical delivery of measures and interventions focused on improving the people’s resilience has upon communities and the quality of individual’s lives.

Based on current evidence, she is developing a self-report tool that examines the assets and resources that help build resilience and an intervention manual with guidance for groups working with people in our communities.

The resilience tools have been trialled with a large community of older people in Edinburgh. Jacqui is now pursuing whether levels of community resilience, as measured by the resilience tool at discharge from hospital, is predictive of readmission. She is also supporting use of the resilience tools with Community Mental Health teams to help identify service user’s needs and potential intervention opportunities.

Jacqui’s work involves close collaboration with service users and practitioners/volunteers from health, social care, voluntary sector, housing and the community.

Jacqui has been invited to teach on both under graduate and post graduate OT programmes. Content has been focused on Jacqui’s research streams and has included evidence based service design and development, research informed service development, theoretical perspectives, interventions and evaluation, assessment design and development, methods of critiquing assessments and measures, and managing change. Jacqui also routinely leads learning and development of service teams in a practice context.
