Jamie Hayes is the Technical Production Manager in the Media, Communication and Performing Arts Division.
- Overview
After a childhood spent in and around professional theatre throughout Scotland I began my full time technical career in 1996 at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End as deputy head of stage. This position lasted 8 years and gave me the opportunity to work with some of Britain’s best actors and technical creative teams to produce some outstanding stage productions and television events in one of the world’s leading playhouses.
Seeking a new challenge I left the Haymarket to become part of the production carpentry team at the Prince Edward Theatre London on the original Mary Poppins musical. I stayed at the Prince Edward working as show crew and maintenance technician until I decided to return home to Scotland taking the position of production carpenter in the scenic workshop at Dundee Rep Theatre.
In 2007 I moved to the Citizens Theatre Glasgow to take the role of Technical Manager for all in house, visiting and touring productions. This role was one of the most challenging and expansive of my career to date requiring me to have extensive creative input into all roles of theatre production. As the Citz is Glasgow based I had the pleasure of working on a regular basis with students from The Royal Conservatoire (formally RSAMD) and through this work found great pleasure in teaching and mentoring technical students through the processes and practices of producing theatre in a busy rep house.
In my new home at QMU I hope to take our students to a new level in technical knowledge and offer them the best use of our extensive resources to improve their artistic output and make the very best of their experience here.
