Kavi Jagadamma (PhD, PgCert, PGDEI, BSc) is a Lecturer in the Dietetics, Nutrition & Biological Sciences, Physiotherapy, Podiatry & Radiography Division. He is also an Associate member of Centre for Health, Activity and Rehabilitation Research.

Dr Kavi Jagadamma started his career in a voluntary organisation in India working as a physiotherapist and co-ordinator of early intervention services for at-risk children. This role included co-ordination of family centred early intervention services at two different centres, which supported families from low socioeconomic backgrounds. After three years of working as a clinician he joined PhD at Queen Margaret University and completed an exploratory study investigating the effects of tuning of ankle foot orthoses and footwear using 3D motion analyses on gait, function and quality of life of children with cerebral palsy. After completion of PhD, he joined Queen Margaret University as a lecturer. He is a Fellow of Higher Education Academy and is involved in design and delivery of modules at undergraduate and post graduate levels. He is also part of various research activities, predominantly in the area of long term neurological conditions.

Kavi has been involved in design, development and implementation of research projects evaluating effectiveness of interventions in various patient populations.

The current active projects include:

  • Lead investigator on a funded project looking at perspectives of stroke survivors on community based exercise
  • Collaborator on a funded project looking at exercise behavior of children with cerebral palsy and their barriers and facilitators to exercise.
  • Supervisor on a PhD project investigating the effects of a pragmatic community based exercise on gait and function of young adults with cerebral palsy

Kavi is also involved in various student projects in the form of systematic reviews, primary data collection studies and secondary analysis of data predominantly relating to patients with neurological conditions.

Active Research Interests:

  • Measurement of function and gait with particular interest in 3D motion analysis
  • Facilitating exercise and physical activity in people living with stroke
  • Interventions to improve function and quality of life of people living with long term neurological conditions
  • Rehabilitation technologies
  • Facilitating physical activity participation in children and young people who are living with cerebral palsy

Research Methods:

  • Quantitative study designs to evaluate effectiveness of interventions, reliability and validity of measurements etc.
  • Qualitative methods employing face-to-face interviews and focus groups

Principal Investigator

Kavi is currently the programme tutor for MSc Advancing Physiotherapy Practice and is involved in the design and the delivery of this programme. He is the co-ordinator of two longitudinal induction modules accessed by several post-graduate programmes across the School of Health Sciences which aim to support transition of students in to Masters level study. Other main areas of teaching include

- Foundation sciences of physiotherapy practice relevant to human movement and function such as musculoskeletal and neuro anatomy, and biomechanics

- Applied neurosciences relevant to neurological rehabilitation including neuropsychology and principles of motor control and learning

- Audit, service evaluation and research design and implementation

- Measurement and evaluation to improve effectiveness of clinical practice
