After gaining membership of The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, I worked as a financial controller and consultant in various sectors including biotechnology, printing, financial services, tourism and retail. I was also a lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University, University of York, Newcastle University, Heriot-Watt University and Coventry University.

My main research area is the sociology of accounting and finance, particularly the problems of corporate governance, earnings management and environmental reporting. Recent work includes a book on research methods for accounting and finance students.
