An army of volunteers from Queen Margaret University (QMU) in Musselburgh is gearing up to give the John Muir Way a spring clean on Friday 21st April.

University staff and students are giving up their time to spruce up sections of the famous walking route, which takes its name from renowned environmentalist, geologist and botanist, John Muir, who was born in Dunbar.

The clean up coincides with the anniversary of John Muir’s birth and is one day before the annual environmental protection event, Earth Day.

As well as celebrating the legacy of John Muir, volunteers will be cleaning up sections of footpath and beach at Morrison’s Haven, opposite the Prestongrange Mining Museum, between 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Craig Cathcart, Chair of QMU’s Sustainability Committee, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with East Lothian Council to help clean up the John Muir Way. This popular walking route is well used by ramblers, families and visitors to the county. We want to do our bit to keep it clean and accessible, so that everyone can continue enjoying it.

“At QMU, we’ve placed sustainability at the very core of our vision, taking a joined up approach to its social, environmental and economic dimensions. Our holistic approach not only takes account of our immediate campus environment and everyday behaviour, but also extends to our local community in East Lothian and thinking about the impact of our teaching and research across the world.”

East Lothian Provost, Ludovic Broun-Lindsay, added: “The John Muir Way was recently awarded Scotland’s Great Trail status and has become a popular destination for both local residents and visitors to enjoy.

“This initiative by QMU very much reflects the ethos of Muir himself in recognising the importance of nature and outdoor recreation for people of all ages and abilities.”
