Tiril Fredriksen is from Oslo in Norway. She is currently studying MSc International Management & Leadership at QMU.

Tiril has already achieved an undergraduate degree in Events Management from QMU. Although she really enjoyed studying Events Management at QMU, she decided she wanted to broaden her business knowledge and future employment prospects by pursuing the MSc International Management & Leadership.

Tiril thinks that QMU’s friendly and supportive campus environment means that students like her have a more personal relationship with lecturers and tutors.

Why did choose to study in Edinburgh?

“I chose to study in Edinburgh because I’d previously visited the city and I really felt at home here. It’s a beautiful city with so much charm. The city centre is small enough to not be dependent on public transport, yet it’s a very busy place with plenty of cafes, bars, theatres and attractions.

“I think the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Christmas market are annual highlights. The Old Town is particularly charming with so many old and beautiful buildings, and small, hidden alleyways.

“The fact that there are several airlines with frequent, direct flights to my hometown in Oslo makes it very easy for me to host visitors or go home for a weekend.”

What do you enjoy most about studying MSc International Management & Leadership at QMU?

“I think it’s great that we are only 15 people in the class, which means you get to know everyone really well. It’s such an international class with students from across the UK and all over the world.

“I like the structure of the course. Rather than having to write a traditional dissertation, we get the chance to undertake a live project for an external organisation, which gives us some valuable experience.”

“The lecturers are very supportive and always available, either through email or for meeting up for a chat. They also have good connections with industry, which means that students regularly get the chance to hear from guest lecturers in different sectors.

“There is a lot of group work and presentations, which can be both challenging and rewarding, but it’s definitely a very valuable experience to have.

“Overall I think the mix of theory, practical group work, field trips and guest lecturers makes it a very varied and interesting course.”

“There are more modules per semester than my undergraduate degree and it’s a quite intensive course, but I think assessments are spread quite evenly over the year so that we don’t face competing deadlines at the same time.”

What are your plans after graduation?

“After completing my postgraduate studies at QMU, I hope to pursue a career in marketing or events.”
