A graduate from Bandon in County Cork, Republic of Ireland, has been awarded a top radiography prize at Queen Margaret University’s (QMU) recent graduation ceremony in Edinburgh.

Darragh O’Donovan (22), who attended Bruce College in Cork, has won the Society of Radiographers Professional Award for Academic Achievement after graduating with a BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography from QMU. The Society of Radiographers represents the professional, educational and workplace interests of radiographers in the UK and overseas.

Darragh has already secured full time graduate employment with NHS Lothian in Edinburgh, where he is now practicing as a Therapeutic Radiographer at Edinburgh Cancer Centre. He also hopes to pursue postgraduate study in radiography at QMU in the near future.

Commenting on his radiography award and experience as a student at QMU, Darragh said: “It’s an amazing feeling to have worked so hard for my degree and now to be in practice as a qualified member of a multi-disciplinary radiography team. I plan to develop as much as I can in this role and I’m really excited about the challenges and opportunities to come.

“I chose to study radiography at QMU as it offers such a fascinating health professional qualification that can take you anywhere in the world. The teaching facilities and programme team have great experience in the field and the campus environment really appealed to me.

“The highlight of my degree was getting the opportunity to benefit from clinical placements at various Scottish cancer centres. This experience has given me a real feel for the radiography profession and a true understanding of both team and department diversity across different centres.”
