Coming from College Induction Programme

Students coming from college usually have many questions about studying at university, such as:

  • What are the main differences between college and university study?
  • What is expected when you write an essay or report?
  • Who can help with personal or study issues?

In order to answer these questions and give you the best start to your studies, we run a bespoke Coming from College induction programme. The programme is facilitated by staff and students. Our students are there to give you advice and support during your transition to QMU. Further down this page you will see some of their hints and tips...

PLEASE SEE LAST WEEK'S NEWSLETTER for the links to the events taking place this week.

Student Feedback on Coming from College Induction...

"I feel far better and far more confident than I thought I would. I will perform far better in my course now that I have had the Induction..."

"I was reluctant to attend at first. However, it was 100% worthwhile and would definitely encourage other direct entrants to participate..."

"It really helped improve my confidence! Overall it is a very good thing to have as it makes you more aware of university life."
"A fantastic opportunity to be integrated nicely into QMU; thank you"

"The constant reminder that someone is always there to help you. Throughout school and college we were told that in Uni no one is there to help you and you have to do everything by yourself"

"I thought all of the sessions were very useful!"

"Fantastic! Really enjoyed meeting new people and experiencing university style of work"
"Information given was great... Everyone's been extremely friendly and helpful and am feeling more confident about starting uni life."

"... allowed you to meet new people who I will continue to be friends with. This also gave me an insight as to what I am going to expect from QMU but also, what QMU expect of me"

"I was scared at the start - wasn't sure what to expect. I would do it again!"

Hints and Tips from fellow students!

"I think speaking to the student facilitators was really helpful as they gave us tips and advice. Reading in advance and being prepared for change will help settle all DE's at QMU. Also, don't hold back on asking questions because everyone is super helpful."
- Tyler, BA (Hons) Events Management. Joined in Level 3 after studying HND Events Management at Edinburgh College

"As a mature direct entrant student last year I did not know what to expect from university life, which can be quite scary no matter what age you are. I would highly recommend attending the DE induction week as the information shared is definitely of great benefit to the QMU way of learning. It will also give you have the opportunity to set any additional help in place which I would do as early as possible to ensure you get the help you require."
- Bernie, BA (Hons) International Hospitality and Tourism Management. Joined Level 2 after studying HND Professional Cookery at Forth Valley College

"Top tip: keep on top of the material on the Hub. Look at the course outlines. Try and read material for the following week, so that you go into the lectures/seminars with an idea what that week is going to be about! Also, don't be scared to ask for help!"
- Steph, BA (Hons) Drama and Performance. Joined Level 2 after studying HND Acting & Performance at Edinburgh College

"In getting ready for university, I would encourage accessing the reading list from Level 1 of the course and read some of it over the summer, this way you know what your fellow students from Level 1 have been taught here. Join the gym (even just one class).  It will allow you to shut off from the academic side for a while, but also helps refresh your thinking. Stepping away from an assignment can help give clarity to the jumbled mass of information you will have read. Get to know the names and faces of the people there to help, they are all approachable, particularly in finances and the ELS. Worrying about finances will deviate you from your work and asking for help with structuring an assignment is a sign of strength; everyone gets a little lost sometimes."
- Suzanne, BSc (Hons) Psychology. Joined in Level 2 after studying HNC Social Sciences at West Lothian College
