Graham was Vice Principal and Clerk of Senate until 2012 and held the Chair of English Language (1990-2012) at the University of Glasgow . Prior to 1990 he was an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen. Until 2014 he was Vice President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a member of its Council and remains on the  RSE International Committee. He was Vice Chair of the Board of the National Library of Scotland until 2014 and remains on its Governance Committee. He is an assessor for QAA ELIR and past member of two UK Research Assessment panels. His strong interest in research in Europe is reflected in his 2014 election to the Board of ALLEA, the Federation of European National Academies, representing the UK, and in his research and teaching assessments in a number of EU countries; he was also Hon. Secretary of the European Society for the Study of English for a number of years.
