The powers and governance framework of Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh are prescribed in the University's Statutory Instrument, The Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh (Scotland) Order of Council 2007. This was amended in 2015.
The Chancellor is the titular head of the University. She confers degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions.
The Court is the governing body of the University. The Court delegates certain responsibilities to a Senate, including the academic work of the university and the conferring of degrees and other awards.
The University's management team is responsible for operational matters, led by the Principal and Vice-Chancellor, who is the University’s Chief Executive Officer.
