Green Performance Statistics

Carbon Footprint - QMU leads the sector in terms of low carbon emissions with a carbon footprint of 630kgCo2/m2/annum per student against a sector norm of 1273kg. Inherent in this is the lowest carbon emitting heat generation plant at 2.8 kg Co2/m2 against a published best practice figure 24 kg CO2/m2 . The Biomass fuelled system has resulted in 85% improvement in Co2 emissions compared with equivalent gas fired heating (18.7 kg CO2/m2) and a 92% improvement on the previous estate (34 kg C02/m2)
Energy efficiency – In terms of heating consumption, the new campus is achieving 124.6 kWh/m2 which is better than best practice for the sector and a substantial improvement of 41% on the 209.8kW/h/m2 realised for the previous campus development.
Water conservation - Water consumption for the campus at 736 l/m2 is a 28% improvement over the previous estate at 1,016 l/m2.
Thin client computer technology – has resulted in 393,120 kwh/m2 savings annually for 1200 thin client terminals compared with the use of an equivalent PC infrastructure, saving 211.1 tonnes of C02 emissions and £100,000/annum in energy. .
Green transport – thanks to our green transport plan, public transport use has increased to 57% from 34% and single user car journeys have decreased from 48% to 34% compared with activity on the previous estate.
